Hurt while driving for Uber or Lyft

You're working, but the companies call you an independent contractor. That affects what coverage you have.

When another driver hits you

If someone else caused the crash, your claim is mainly against that driver's insurance. If their coverage is too low, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, from your own policy or, in some situations, from the app's policy, may help.

Your status in the app matters

  • App off: your personal policy generally applies.
  • Waiting for a ride: lower minimum coverage applies.
  • Ride accepted or passenger on board: higher coverage is required.
Watch your personal policy. Some personal auto policies exclude driving for hire. Tell us what you have; don't assume you're uncovered.

Lost income

Your app earnings history is evidence of what the crash cost you. Download your earnings summaries and keep them.

Workers' comp?

Because rideshare drivers are usually classified as independent contractors, workers' compensation often doesn't apply. That's one more reason to look closely at every policy involved.
